Production Diary #5

I have notice that the oldest videos date to just a performance based one, but there was a slight progress with Michael Jackson's thriller one, where the element of film got introduced. I have came up with an idea of maybe combining film with lie performance to make a tour diary type video. As a lot of famous narrative videos have been made, the genre of these all follow pop, mainstream and R&B which are the opposite of mine. If I wanted to be safe I could follow the easy path of using both performance and narrative, as shown in the BFMV video, however this has been done way to many times before and has also gotten a bit boring in my opinion. Therefore I want to bring back the old school and make it new school as that is what pop punk/ post-hardcore is all about. I want my video to include some of the historical omelets which created music videos as successful as it is now, but still keep it current. This is why I am going to base mine on a live performance as this hasn't been seen as much in the modern era, but it will pull in a crowd.

Production Diary #4

After researching the conventions of a music video and finding out what exactly goes in I am even more clear and set on what I am going to do. As my genre falls under the main genre of rock I will be sticking to the lighting, Mise-en-scene, cinematography and sound very closely. However I still want to put a bit of a twist on it and make it original to call my own. It's hard to think of something that's never been done before as pretty much everything has. However because of my genre it's going to be hard to do this, but I am still coming up with ideas as to what I can do to make it original. But it has helped me with what I can put and how to do it, as I now know the importance of lighting and camera movement is, as with each change of pace and tempo the camera needs to follow. Being heavily involved in music will help me contribute to the editing part and hopefully make it easier for me.

Production Diary #3

Just an update to tell you that I have messages a few bands and also tweeted it using social networking sites and I've had three replies.
One band who are London based have accepted, but are not too sure on dates, and if it were to happen it would be late September( Keep The Change)

The second are just a group of friends who have an indie band and want a video made. I'm not too sure that they would suit what I'm looking for however they are acting as my backup option just in case.
The last band stood out for me as they instantly we're my favourite.

A Season Of Secrets. They're from Sheffield, and aren't that known at the moment, however they do have the right fan base, music and style I am going for. They are playing a few festivals and gigs, with an album release and have agreed for me to shoot them a video if all goes to plan.

Production Diary #2

Now that I've been watching loads of music videos on MTV, Kerrang! and Scuzz, it has given me a more ideal and precise choice of what I am looking for in a music video. I have already chosen the genre which is Pop-punk/ Post-hardcore, and many of these videos appear on these three channels. From what I can gather from youtube as well, what is really new and in at the moment is live coverage videos. Which involve hardly any narrative, but pure live performances from gigs and the bands life. This is the best portrayal for my genre as it what all the music videos are like now, so if I follow this trend then I am sure to grab the audience in.

Inital Ideas

Here are a few videos which I have found a great interest of to me. They differ from the usual stereotypical music video, as it is all performance and live based rather than having a narrative followed through. Because of the genre I am going (Hardcore, post-hardcore) this type of video fits in the best as it portrays it perfectly. The ban Your Demise have used this style of music video for most of their songs, which has inspired me to do something similar as it is also of a great interest to me.

The idea I want to follow, combines all these videos as it shows some of the band performing live, the interaction with the crowd and also captures the atmosphere of it all, it then alternating with the band members on tour, messing around backstage and doing sound checks, giving me a Varity of scenes and different perspectives of the band.

Production Diary #1

I have just set up my blog and started to play around with the layout. I am excited to get started with my A2 course and learn all about music videos and what goes in to actually make one. I have already come up with a few ideas as to what I can do for mine, and plan on filming some in the summer if I can. I am really inspired with getting an early start now because I have so many ideas I want to try out before I actually go ahead and do them.
