Production Diary #20

A few days ago I had planed to go to Newcastle for the last date of Alone Tonight's tour and get all my filming done for the band. I had previously panned out before what I was going to do and what shots I needed. Looking back on what I had got from Guilford, I knew that I didn't have t get much as the work had been done for me previously. Thanks to my great organisation and planning with what I needed to film and when, sticking closely to my storyboard and also my scheduled I knew I would be mostly don by the end of the Newcastle gig.
All I really needed is to make sure I had enough shots of the band, as they lived 7 hours away and would be a hassle to get more, so I made sure on the day that I was filming throughout, making sure I didn't miss anything.

And when I got back, I watched over the footage, and was shocked to see that I had over 20 minutes worth, even more than I though I would ever need. So in that case I was more confident and happy with myself that I had stuck to my original plans and schedule which really did help me in the end.
I had a brilliant time in Newcastle as well, arriving at 3pm and leaning at 11pm. It took me a 6 hour drive by mega bus alone, but when I got there the band was waiting, all excited for the last show, they showed me around Newcastle as well, so I got a few shots of that and looked after me for the whole evening.

The gig infact was their very best, seeing as it was a home town show, all of their fans, family and friends all attended, showing their love and support, making it a brilliant
time for me to film, as this time there was more of a crowd and the lighting was perfect.
I have also taught myself how to use the camera on manual settings so I can change each part depending on where I am and the lighting, which helped me get the best footage.
As well as that I got a chance to get a few live pictures from the gig, which I could add somewhere for extra effect.
Overall I was very happy that I went all that way because it gave me the best footage and I now know my music video is going to rock!, Can't wait for editing.

About The Band

Alone Tonight are made up of 5 young lads from Newcastle who formed together in 2009. Classed as pop punk/ rock the band consist of Karl Wilson (Vocals), Callum Muir (Bass), Michael Muir (Lead Guitar), Joseph Muir (Rythym Guitar) and finally Glen Lewis (Drums), they are currently unsigned.
They play music which has catchy hooks and large choruses that are easy to sing along to and always eager to get the audience going along with them.

As Newcastle is their home town, they have played pretty much everywhere in it, including the O2 Academy, Space Bar, Riverside, The Other Rooms, and are always on the lookout for shows and tours.

They enjoying touring around all new cities and meeting their fans, but most importantly playing shows and having fun whilst doing it.

Production Diary #19

I got back from the gig last night, and it actually went better then I had expected. The band was just as lovely as I remember and greeted me making me feel welcome, Instantly there was no awkwardness and we all just mingled together. I got a few shots of them outside chilling being lads, annoying each other and joking around, and then them travelling to the tour van where I got a look inside. They made sure that it was humorous, so I was thinking of adding in some of them bits halfway through the video. I filmed the whole thing in a fish eye lens. When I got inside the venue, it was really small, but perfect, I kept swapping lenses to get different shots and angles, as I got on stage for up close and personal shots. This all went perfectly. However I didn't get to take any pictures as the set was too short and my main focus was filming, I was really happy with the result. The band was easy and lovely to work with, so I was thinking of maybe seeing them again just to get even more shots.

Production Diary #18

Today there is a bit of last minute planning and I have decided to go to Guildford as my new band, Alone Tonight are playing there. It's going to be the first time actually meeting them in a year so I'm pretty nervous and also being in a place I've never heard of however I think it will go well.
I have also got my storyboard with me that shows the whole music video and all the shots I need, I don't think that I will get it all done, however If I just focus on a few shots then that would be perfect.
I have an idea to focus on their outside activity and the more chilled out shots today as I would get more time with the band in doing this. I have planned my shooting very carefuly and hope that it all comes out how I wanted it to. I'm off now!

Production Diary #17

Alright so I have had some last minute luck with my band. This was always going to be an issue however I saw on my facebook that one of the bands had a tour and three of the dates were in London or near, so I decided to message them and ask. To my luck, they replied straight away saying what a great Idea it would have been, I saw this band last year with just a small crowd and I knew they would fit my genre and my target audience, as they are young, new, fresh, attractive and just normal teenagers from Newcastle.
The only problem was that one of the dates were in an over 18 venue which I could not go to, the second was today on results day, and late notice so I am hopefully going tomorrow to Guildford
and trying to get most of it done then.

This is the kind of thing I would expect to happen with bands, but I am not worrying because Alone Tonight are 100% in on it, and understand everything.
They have been so nice to let me film and get in for free to their gigs and support them on, I can't wait to start!

Production Diary #16

I haven't found much advertising of the band that I have chosen's magazines yet so I looked at others, however this is what I would expect to see, the usual advertisement. It's very different fro my genre as merch is one of the big impacts as to how to promote a band. All of these ways are the best and featured in many many magazines as well as on line on the bands website and social links.

Another quick update on my chosen band, So far they have not confirmed, or know of any tour dates they will be doing so I have been looking for another back as a back up in case who are willing too and so far no luck, However I am still eager and keen that I will get one who are fully committed.

Analysis of band's Magazines advert

Advertisement in magazines isn't really as important for my genre of music. The main thing's they advertise is tours, merch and album releases.

As you can see here, this band (The Story So Far) are featured on the front cover, all rock magazines will have a similar layout if they want to focus on the band, which they will do when they have released a new album, featuring a new tour, or something new has come from them. If not they would usually just feature one of the members due to a mixture of stories they need to publish, or just the fact that this person has been in the news recently and their story is important. The band will normally be presented wearing merch and causal clothing to seem approachable and friendly, however this differs to each sub-genre.
You then may find a leaflet inside a magazine or just a page where another clothing distribution company sells the bands merch. For example, Impericon is the UK's most leading one as they have practically every single bands merch on their website, and each week they will have an offer on a particular band showing off their merch. In the picture you can see this, as the band: While She Sleeps are featured this week, showing off a few of their designs promoting the band further. This is very important for my genre of music as they rely on merch sales as one of their sources to make money and go on tour for their fans, so you will definitely find a lot of merch-magazine adverts.

You then have the most important thing, which fans always are on the look out for, tour posters. In almost every magazine you will find at least three of these all by different bands, in Kerrang! they feature a whole double spread dedicated to them as they know how important it is, not only does it promote the main band but the supporting ones as well. You will look at these posters to see the headlining band first but also the support and if you like them enough then you would go, this is the best source of advertising in a magazine as most of their fan base will want to see their favourite band live, but they also need a source to tell them where and when they can.

The posters all follow a similar pattern as on one side they have all the dates, and places they are touring in, this is then surrounded by some art work, normally something related to the band, their logo, album work or even related to the tour headline. Some tours play on the bands name to make it sound more appealing and interesting which then follows a pattern all around.  As in the "House party tour" poster you can see how it actually looks like a house party in the way its laid out and everything. This is very important to bands, to try and attract and audience to go to their shows by making it as interesting as they can.

The last thing you would expect to see in a magazine would be the bands album release. It's a pretty simple layout as the main image would be the album cover, or the band if they don't want to give anything away. Underneath would be what it's called, with the bands name along a single that has already been released and successful. You then have the date of its release right at the bottom.
Here Blink-182 have stuck to a basic colour theme of black and white as this is what their album is styled like. You will find a few website links, and logos of their distribution company and record label also to promote them further.

The advert it's self takes up one A4 page in a magazine, however some do squeeze them down if they aren't as big or important.

Production Diary #15

I have been researching on Digipaks and how they about, but I have also found out that now in 2013 that no one would buy them. As HMV had gone down, most people get their music offline and download it for free not even paying, so when artist release albums they are hardly making any money of it. Baring this in mind, MY TARGET AUDIENCE are not like this, as in where they care more about the music than anything. Going to a lot of shows and having a lot of music lovers on twitter as the same pop punk genre has showed me that they all love to buy CD's, Vinyl's but also cassette.
I want to try and combined all of these aspects for mine and make it as interesting as possible, maybe with every digipak put in a free on-line music download

Production Diary #14

Whilst reading about one of my favourite artist Blink-182, the tracking part is fairly simple, it's basically their past right up until the present day of what they have been doing. I could track my band, A Season Of Secrets, however they would have a very short description and not much to track as they haven't been around for that long or even noticed as much. However it interest me as to what their tracking would be like, I have no yet heard from then in a few weeks which is slightly worrying, however they are busy right now writing an album which does talk up a lot of time, I should be hearing from them soon in late September/ August for their album release show, which could be classed as one of the major tracking events in their timeline.

Production Diary #13

Looking at past students work, I have seen the high level of expectants which I have to maintain. The three videos I liked the best, are all different in each way. My favourite of them all would have to be the Fray, closely followed by the XX, as it's uniqueness which I have not yet seen in other videos.
All are original and differ from the actual one made. The XX don't actually make music videos, but to see one done, actually fitted it perfectly, each shot, the choice of colour and no colour was perfect. It suited the song and followed a close narrative also.
This has give me some ideas as to what I can add to mine, for example with the editing and blanking out scenes, I could also maybe change the colour of my footage when it switches onto the bands life opposed to the live shots.
